How to choose

Pick Lamar if…

  • Wolves are your top priority.
  • You’re visiting in winter or early spring.
  • You have a spotting scope and don’t mind cold dawns.
  • You want year-round, reliable access.

Pick Hayden if…

  • Bison and birds are your priority.
  • You’re visiting in late spring or summer.
  • You want river wildlife (otters, pelicans).
  • You’re based near Canyon or Fishing Bridge.

If you only have one morning

Pick Lamar at dawn. The density and diversity of watchable wildlife on the northern range — wolves, bears, bison, pronghorn, coyotes — is hard to beat anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for wolves, Lamar or Hayden Valley?+

Lamar Valley, decisively. The northern range packs (Lamar Canyon, Junction Butte, and others) hold territories overlapping Lamar, and the open valley plus year-round road make wolves reliably visible there. Hayden is not a reliable wolf destination.

Which is better for bison?+

Hayden Valley. While both have bison, Hayden routinely holds the park's largest herds, sometimes blanketing the valley floor in summer. Lamar's bison herds are also substantial, especially during spring calving.

Which is better for bears?+

Both are good, with a slight edge to Lamar in spring and Hayden in fall. Lamar's open meadows make foraging grizzlies visible; Hayden's river corridor draws bears in hyperphagia. Carry bear spray in either.

Which is easier to reach?+

Depends on season. Lamar's road (Northeast Entrance Road) is open to cars year-round. Hayden's road (Grand Loop, Canyon to Fishing Bridge) closes in winter. In summer both are easily driven.

Can I visit both in one day?+

It's a stretch — they're about 50 miles apart by road. If you have one dawn, pick Lamar for wolves or Hayden for bison. If you have two days, do Lamar at dawn one day and Hayden the next.
